Receipt scanner for eBay resellers: tie every receipt to the items it paid for.
Photograph a purchase receipt in the Strooply app, review what it read, and link the cost to the items it covers. Lots, sourcing trips, mileage and a tax summary sit on the same records.
Last reviewed: October 21, 2026. Covers tax years 2025 and 2026. Rules, rates, thresholds, and forms change and vary, so this page may not reflect the latest version.
What the receipt scanner does
- Scan in the app
- Take up to 3 photos of a receipt in the Strooply app and review what it read. Receipt scanning is on Pro and Team plans. The web portal shows and edits receipts but does not scan them.
- Link lines to items
- Link each receipt line to an item, or group items into a lot and split its cost evenly across the ones not yet listed or sold. Lots are on Pro and Team plans.
- Tax summary and receipts ZIP
- The app exports a tax summary CSV of year or quarter totals. The web portal downloads a ZIP of receipt images with a receipt summary CSV. Both are on Pro and Team plans, for your records and not tax advice.
Sample receipt: an example, not a real purchase
A made-up receipt from a made-up store, with two lines linked to two items, one of them our example item, the 1900 Robinson Crusoe. The amounts are illustrative only.
| Receipt line | Amount on receipt | Linked item | Cost stored on the item |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robinson Crusoe hardcover | $4.00 | 1900 Robinson Crusoe Daniel Defoe Harper & Brothers Rhead Edition | $4.00 |
| Paperback novel | $2.00 | Paperback novel, first edition | $2.00 |
Each linked amount is stored as that item's cost and is used as its cost of goods in profit figures once the item sells.
Scan a receipt in the app
In the Strooply app, take up to 3 photos of a receipt with the camera or pick them from the photo library. Strooply reads the merchant, the date, the totals, and the line items. When totals or discounts do not agree, it asks you to review the receipt instead of guessing. Optical reading can misread prices, dates, or line items, so check the result against the paper receipt before relying on it.
Scanning happens in the mobile app. The web portal shows your receipts and lets you view and edit them. Receipt scanning is available on Pro and Team plans.

Link receipt lines to items
Each line on a scanned receipt can be linked to an item in your inventory. The linked amount is stored as that item's cost, and it is used as the item's cost of goods in profit figures once the item sells. That keeps the cost tied to the paper trail that supports it. The cost of goods sold guide covers how cost of goods sold works and what the IRS says about it.
One receipt, many items
A bag, box, or pallet is bought once and sold item by item. Group the items into a lot and enter the lot total, and Strooply splits the cost evenly across the items that have not been listed or sold yet. The split works in whole cents, so the shares add up to exactly the total, and any leftover cents go to the last items in the list. Items that have already sold keep the cost they had when they sold.
The split is even, not weighted by value. To divide a purchase by estimated value instead, enter each item's cost by hand. The guide to splitting a receipt across items compares the two approaches with a worked example. Lot pricing is part of sourcing trips, which are available on Pro and Team plans.
Sourcing trips and mileage
A sourcing trip groups the stops of a buying run with the purchases and receipts from it. Strooply can estimate the driving distance between the stops using Google Maps data, or you can enter the miles by hand. Each trip is priced at the IRS standard mileage rate for the trip's date. For 2026 there are two business rates: 72.5 cents before July 1 and 76 cents from July 1.4 The mileage guide and the sourcing mileage calculator go through the rates and the records the IRS describes.
Estimate: logged miles multiplied by the IRS standard mileage rate shown. It does not mean any amount is deductible for you. A tax professional can advise on your situation.
Mileage tracking is available on Pro and Team plans, and sourcing trips on Pro and Team plans. Estimated distances can differ from the miles actually driven.
What you can export
- Tax summary CSV (app)
- From the Taxes tab in the app, export a CSV for a full year or a quarter. It holds totals, not a row for each sale: gross receipts, returns, net revenue, cost of goods split into amounts with and without receipts, fee and shipping label lines, other expenses, sales tax paid on inventory, and mileage with miles, trips, the rate, and the estimated amount. Dollar amounts are written as text such as $1,234.56.
- Copy Summary (web)
- The web Taxes page has a quarter selector and a Copy Summary button that copies the summary as text. The CSV file itself is exported from the app.
- Receipts ZIP (web)
- From the web portal, download a ZIP for a year or a quarter. It holds the receipt images, a receipt_summary.csv with the date, store, subtotal, tax paid, total, kind, category, and file name of each receipt, and a disclaimer file.
The tax summary and the receipts ZIP are available on Pro and Team plans, and the receipts page on the web needs receipt scanning, which is on Pro and Team plans. Strooply does not offer a per-sale spreadsheet export from the Taxes tab. These files are summaries for your own records and for a tax professional, and they are not tax forms.
Figures are estimates for informational purposes only: not tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult a qualified tax professional before filing.
Strooply is record-keeping software. It does not prepare or file tax returns or refund claims. Share this summary with your tax professional.
The Schedule C guide shows where common reseller items appear on the form, and the Form 1099-K guide covers the federal reporting threshold of more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions that the IRS describes.5
Why receipts matter for resellers
For goods bought for resale, the IRS describes supporting documents as ones that identify the payee, the amount paid, proof of payment, and the date, and that describe the item. It lists cash register tapes, credit card receipts and statements, and invoices as examples, and notes that a combination of documents may be needed.1 The IRS also describes electronic records as subject to the same requirements as paper ones.1 Publication 583 is the IRS publication on starting a business and keeping records.2
Resellers buy at thrift stores, estate sales, and liquidators, often paying with cash or a card and carrying home a slip of paper. A receipt that is linked to the item it paid for is easier to match to a sale later. The cost of goods sold guide explains why each item's cost matters.
Good to know
Strooply is record-keeping software. It does not prepare or file tax returns, refund claims, or other filings, it is not a tax preparer, and its figures are estimates to check against your own records.
How long to keep records depends on the facts. The IRS describes periods that generally start at three years and run longer in some situations.3 A qualified tax professional can advise on yours.
Receipt scanner and tax export FAQ
Do I need to keep receipts for thrift purchases?
The IRS describes purchase records as documents that identify the payee, the amount paid, proof of payment, and the date, and describe the item.1 What fits your situation is a question for a qualified tax professional. The cost of goods sold guide has more.
Can I scan receipts on the web?
No. Receipts are captured with the Strooply app using the camera or photo library. The web portal shows the receipts and lets you view and edit them.
What if one receipt covers many items?

Is Strooply tax software?
No. Strooply is record-keeping software. It does not prepare or file tax returns, and it is not a tax preparer.
What does the tax export include?
The app's CSV holds summary totals for a year or quarter, not one row per sale. The web portal's ZIP holds receipt images and a receipt summary CSV. Both are listed above.
How long should I keep receipts?
The IRS publishes retention periods that depend on the situation.3 A qualified tax professional can say which applies to you.
