Goodwill outlets and bins by city: how they work and what resellers say.

Goodwill is run by many independent local organizations, and several describe their outlet the same way: it sells items that did not sell in their regular stores. One says its outlet features unsold items from its retail stores,¹ and another says the items at its bins have already been through a retail Goodwill store and did not sell there.²

Shoppers call these stores "the bins". A Goodwill in Ohio says its outlet stores are sometimes referred to as "the bins" or "bins stores" because everything is placed inside bins instead of on racks.³ The official name is usually "outlet", so search for both words when you look for one near you.

Operators describe three kinds of pricing. Many items are sold by weight: one operator says clothes, linen, glass and other items are sold by the pound by placing shopping carts on a scale.¹ Some are priced per item, and one operator says its items are priced per pound or per item, depending on the item.³ Larger items such as furniture are often priced individually.²

Goodwill Houston adds that its listed prices are guidelines and that it can price items individually at any time, and it says all merchandise is sold as-is and all sales are final.⁴ Treat a bin purchase as a purchase you cannot return, and use the max buy price calculator to decide what a haul can cost before you weigh it.

There is no single Goodwill outlet format. Each operator publishes its own rates, and the rate tables differ by category and by operator: Goodwill Houston and Evergreen Goodwill in the Seattle area each list their own per-pound schedule,⁴⁵ and one operator dates its rate table, so an older table may no longer match the store.³

Layout and restocking also differ. One operator says new bins replace other bins that are taken off the sales floor,³ another says most items are in large bins that are changed frequently,¹ and a third says bins are constantly refreshed with none on the floor more than an hour.⁶ Those are three different operators, so do not assume the pace you read about applies to the store near you.

Each city section below lists places with facts taken from the operator's own page, quoted, linked, and dated. A place marked as unconfirmed has an official source that is old or incomplete. Where a short public comment from a reseller is included, it is attributed, linked, and dated. A comment describes one person's experience on one day.

Add the trip itself to your numbers: the sourcing mileage calculator estimates the cost of the drive, and the eBay shipping guide covers what shipping adds once an item sells.
