What the eBay Standard Envelope is
eBay's developer documentation describes the Standard Envelope as a domestic envelope service with tracking through eBay. It is available only on the US marketplace, requires that the envelope goes through USPS mail, and requires an envelope that meets the dimension and content requirements eBay publishes.1
It applies only to specific sub-categories of Trading Cards, plus similar collectibles such as coins and paper money, postcards, stamps, and patches in supported sub-categories. A card in a category outside that list is not eligible even if it is small and light. The documentation links eBay's list of eligible categories, which is the page to check for your exact category.
Items must cost less than $20
The service is limited to items that cost less than $20.00 USD, and shipping, handling, and taxes do not count toward that limit.1 As an illustration with sample numbers, a card priced at $18 with $3 of shipping charged to the buyer is under the cap, because only the item price counts. A card priced at $24 is over it, whatever the shipping charge.
Cards that sell at or above the cap need a different service. USPS Ground Advantage is the general-purpose option: USPS says it includes USPS Tracking and $100 of insurance, and prices items up to 15.999 ounces in tiers.2 Compare the label price for the actual parcel in eBay or the USPS price calculator.3

What the carrier requires, and what to check with eBay
Whatever the service, the Domestic Mail Manual requires that mailers package a piece to withstand normal transit and handling and that contents do not shift.4 eBay's Standard Envelope has its own envelope dimension and content requirements, which this guide did not confirm. Open eBay's Standard Envelope help page and its size template before you buy envelopes, and look for the exact limits on weight and thickness there.
For protective materials for flat items, see the shipping supplies guide.
What this page leaves out on purpose
This guide does not state the Standard Envelope's weight limit, its envelope dimensions, its label price, or the list of eligible categories, because the eBay pages checked for this guide did not state them or could not be read. These details change, so use eBay's own help page rather than a copy of them here.
Low-priced cards, small margins
On a card that sells for a few dollars, shipping and fees decide whether the sale makes sense. Strooply shows profit after fees and shipping for each item. Try an item's numbers in the eBay fee calculator, and read the shipping overview for how weight and size affect other services.
Track the real cost of every shipment
Strooply is an app for eBay resellers that identifies items from photos, shows live comps and sold-price estimates, drafts eBay listings for your review, and tracks costs and profit.
