eBay selling guide

How to find a seller on eBay, and how to check them.

You can reach a seller from any listing, search for one by username in Advanced search, or keep the ones you like in a saved list. Here is each way, step by step, plus how to read what a seller's feedback and ratings actually tell you.

Five ways

Ways to find a seller

  1. From a listing. Open any item they sell. The seller's username, feedback score and the number of ratings sit in the Seller Information section at the top of the listing.1,2
  2. With Advanced search. eBay's Advanced search page has a Find items tab with a By seller option, alongside By item number, and a separate Stores tab. When we checked, those options were on the page while signed in.3 Choose By seller, enter the username and search.
  3. From your saved sellers. When you have had a good experience with a seller, select Save this seller in the listing and eBay adds them to your saved sellers list in My eBay.4
  4. From your purchase history. If you have already bought from them, the order in your Purchase history has a Contact seller option next to the item.1
  5. From their feedback profile. Select the number in brackets next to a username to go to their feedback profile.2

If you are searching by item number instead of username, the By item number option in Advanced search is the place to enter it.3 If it is your own username you want to look at differently, see our guide to changing your eBay username.

On your phone

Finding saved sellers in the app

On desktop, My eBay is at the top right of most pages. In the iOS eBay app it is at the bottom left of the home screen, and on Android you tap the Menu button at the top left.4 Your saved sellers list is one of the pages in My eBay for buyers, next to your Watchlist, Saved searches and Purchase history.4 The steps in the app can look a little different from the website, so look for the same option names on your own screen.

Getting in touch

Contacting a seller

How you contact a seller depends on whether you have bought from them yet. Not all sellers accept questions before you buy. If a seller does, you will see Contact seller in the Seller Information section of the listing, and you may also see their typical response time.1

  1. Go to the Seller Information section at the top of the listing and select Contact Seller.
  2. Choose the topic that best matches your question on the Find answers page.
  3. If you cannot find a solution, select Other, then select Contact the seller.
  4. Type your question and select Send message.

Keep the conversation on eBay. eBay says it does not allow contact information to be used to complete sales off its site, because buyers and sellers are not covered by its protection programs if something goes wrong.1

Checking a seller

How to read feedback and ratings

A seller's feedback score is shown as a percentage beneath their username. eBay gives the example that a score of 99.5% means 99.5% of the buyers who left feedback had a positive experience.2 The number in brackets next to the username shows how many buyers have left feedback, and the colored star next to it groups sellers by that number.2

Feedback star colors and the number of ratings each stands for, as listed on eBay's Seller ratings page.
StarNumber of ratings
Yellow10 to 49
Blue50 to 99
Turquoise100 to 499
Purple500 to 999
Red1,000 to 4,999
Green5,000 to 9,999
Yellow shooting star10,000 to 24,999
Turquoise shooting star25,000 to 49,999
Purple shooting star50,000 to 99,999
Red shooting star100,000 to 499,999
Green shooting star500,000 to 999,999
Silver shooting star1,000,000 or more

For a closer look, open the feedback profile. It shows detailed seller ratings in four areas, scored from 1 to 5 stars: item description, communication, shipping time, and shipping and handling charges.2 eBay also awards a Top Rated level, and Top Rated Plus listings come with a free return window of 30 days or longer and shipping within one business day with tracking.2

A few habits make the numbers more useful: look at how many ratings sit behind a percentage, read the recent comments and not just the score, and check the detailed ratings for the area you care about, such as shipping time if you need the item quickly.

Why resellers look up other sellers

Looking up other sellers is a practical way to see how similar items are listed and priced. Open a seller who regularly sells what you do, then compare their titles, photos and shipping charges with yours. For real prices, rely on completed sales: our sold listings guide explains the difference between a listed price and a sold price, and reading sold prices covers how to compare like with like.

Once you know a price, check what is left after fees with the eBay fee calculator, and plan packing costs with the shipping supplies guide.

In Strooply

Price from what sold, not who sells it

Strooply does not look up sellers. It takes a photo, identifies the item and pulls live eBay listings for the same thing, so you have comps to compare without typing the search. Its sold-price figure is labeled: live eBay data when recent sales are available, saved data shown with its age, or an AI estimate when there is no sold history. An AI estimate is a guess from the item details, not a record of sales. See how Strooply works.

Check comps and estimated profit, then review the draft before you list

Strooply is an app for eBay resellers that identifies items from photos, shows live comps and sold-price estimates, drafts eBay listings for your review, and tracks costs and profit.
