How to cancel, end or remove an eBay listing.
On eBay you end a listing, you do not delete it. Fixed price listings can be ended at any time, while auctions can be ended early only in certain cases. Here are the steps in Seller Hub and My eBay, the rules for auctions with bids, and what to do about drafts and unsold items.

How to end a listing on eBay
eBay's wording is "end". Whether you search for cancel, remove or delete, the action for a live listing is ending it. These are the steps eBay gives for Seller Hub.1
- Go to the Active listings page in Seller Hub.
- Select the checkbox next to the item you want to end.
- From the dropdown menu, select End item.
To end several listings at once, select the checkbox next to each one and choose End from the Actions menu.1 That is eBay's own description of ending in bulk, and it is the only bulk method we checked.
If you use My eBay instead, go to Active in the Selling section, find the item, and from its dropdown menu select End listing.1 The two menus use slightly different labels, End item in Seller Hub and End listing in My eBay, so look for whichever your screen shows. We did not find eBay documentation for the steps in the mobile app, so we do not list them here. Look for the same End option on your Active listings screen.
Ending, deleting and canceling are different things
People use the words loosely, but eBay treats these as separate actions:
- Ending a listing takes a live listing off eBay before it sells or runs its course.1
- Canceling a bid removes one bidder's bid from your auction. Once canceled, a bid cannot be reinstated.2
- Canceling a transaction is what you do after a buyer has already purchased. eBay covers it in a separate article for sellers.1
- Deleting a draft applies to a listing you started but never published. A draft is not live, so it is not ended.3
eBay discourages ending listings early because it can disappoint buyers, and it names two valid reasons as examples: the item is lost, broken or no longer available, or you made a mistake such as the wrong starting price on an auction.1 If the mistake is small, eBay suggests revising the listing or changing the price instead of ending it.1
When you can end a listing early
A fixed price listing can be ended at any time, with or without open offers. For an auction, the answer depends on three things: whether it has bids, how much time is left, and whether you set a reserve price.1
| Format and time left | Listing state | Can it be ended early? |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed price, any time | With or without open offers | Yes |
| Auction, 12 or more hours left | No bids | Yes |
| Auction, 12 or more hours left | Bids, reserve not met | Yes. A final value fee based on the highest bid may be charged. |
| Auction, 12 or more hours left | Bids, reserve met or no reserve | Yes, by canceling all bids. A final value fee based on the highest bid may be charged. Or you can sell to the highest bidder. |
| Auction, under 12 hours left | No bids | Yes |
| Auction, under 12 hours left | Bids, reserve not met | Yes. A final value fee based on the highest bid may be charged. |
| Auction, under 12 hours left | Bids, reserve met or no reserve | No. You can sell to the highest bidder. |
Two more rules from the same page. You can end auctions that have bids one at a time, and you must pick a valid reason each time. And if you end listings early regularly, eBay may place limits and restrictions on your account.1
If a listing is not eligible to be ended, eBay suggests contacting the bidders to explain and ask them to retract their bids. If the auction has already finished, you can contact the winner and, if they agree, cancel the transaction.1

How to cancel a bid
Ending an auction that has bids and a met or missing reserve means canceling all the bids first. eBay discourages canceling bids unless it is truly needed, and lists these reasons: a buyer asks you to cancel and you agree, you must end the listing because the item is no longer available, you made an error in the listing, or you suspect a fraudulent buyer.2
- Open eBay's Canceling bids placed on your listing page, linked from eBay's help article.
- Enter the item number, the username of the bidder whose bid you are canceling, and the reason.
- Select Submit.
The form asks for one bidder username at a time. Remember that a canceled bid cannot be reinstated.2
Will ending a listing cost you?
The one cost eBay states on its ending page is a possible final value fee based on the highest bid, when you end an auction that has bids.1 For a fixed price listing or an auction with no bids, the ending page does not describe a fee, and we are not going to guess. Check eBay's Selling fees page for what applies to your account and category.4
One fee point works in your favor if you are about to end a fixed price listing to stop it renewing. Fixed price listings are Good 'Til Cancelled and renew once per calendar month, and eBay charges an insertion fee each time one renews. These renewals count toward your monthly zero insertion fee listings.4 So an old listing you no longer want is not free to leave running. To see how fees affect a price you are deciding on, use the eBay fee and profit calculator.
Check these first
- Could you revise instead? A wrong detail in the description or price can often be fixed without ending.1
- Is there a bid or an open offer? The table above decides whether you can end an auction at all. Fixed price listings can be ended with or without open offers.1
- Has it already sold? Then it is a transaction, not a listing, and the steps are different. Use eBay's article on canceling a transaction for sellers.1
- Is the item still in your stock? If it is lost or broken, update your own records so you do not list the same item again by mistake. Planning replacement stock, such as boxes and mailers, is covered in the shipping supplies guide.
Relisting, drafts and unsold items
Relisting. If you ended a listing but want it back, relist it manually. In My eBay, find the item in the Unsold section and select Relist under actions. In Seller Hub, check the box beside the listing on the Manage unsold listings page and select Relist.5 eBay charges an insertion fee (or counts it as a zero insertion fee listing) for both the original listing and the manual relist, though a relisted item that sells may qualify for an insertion fee credit. Fees for any listing upgrades apply again on a manual relist.5
Automatic relisting. If you picked the auto-relist option when you created an auction, eBay relists it up to 8 times when it does not sell. Auctions of 5 days or more relist as they were, and 1 or 3 day auctions relist as 7 day listings. The option is only offered to new and occasional sellers, and it is free except in vehicle categories.5 To stop it, go to My eBay, then Selling, then Active, find the item, choose Remove Automatic Relisting from the More actions menu, and save your changes.5 Refunding a buyer for a return or a canceled order also relists the item automatically unless you uncheck the Relist item box when you refund.5
Unsold items. If an item does not sell after 8 automatic relists, it shows up in your unsold items.5 eBay's relisting page names no deadline for when unsold items disappear, so we do not state one.
Drafts. A draft is a listing you saved to finish later. You find drafts in My eBay or under Manage drafts in Seller Hub. eBay lets you save up to 250 drafts with the quick listing tool, or 5,000 through Seller Hub's bulk tools, and drafts expire 75 days after their last edit.3 eBay's help page does not describe a delete step for drafts, so if you want one gone sooner, look for a delete option on your own drafts screen, or leave it to expire.
Ending and canceling listing questions
How do I cancel a listing on eBay?
In Seller Hub, open Active listings, check the item and choose End item from the dropdown. In My eBay, go to Active and choose End listing from the item's dropdown.1
How do I delete an eBay listing?
For a live listing, eBay's action is to end it. A saved draft is handled from your drafts list instead, and eBay's help page does not document a delete step for it.1,3
Can I end an eBay auction that has bids?
Often yes. With 12 or more hours left you can end it, either because the reserve is not met or by canceling all bids. With fewer than 12 hours left and bids at or above the reserve (or no reserve), you can only sell to the highest bidder.1
Will eBay charge me if I end a listing early?
On an auction with bids, a final value fee based on the highest bid may be charged. For other cases the ending page does not say, so check eBay's Selling fees page.1,4
How do I cancel a bid on my listing?
Use eBay's Canceling bids placed on your listing page. Enter the item number, the bidder's username and a reason, then select Submit. A canceled bid cannot be reinstated.2
How do I stop an eBay listing from relisting?
In My eBay, go to Selling, then Active, and choose Remove Automatic Relisting from the More actions menu for that item. Save your changes.5
How do I end several listings at once?
In Seller Hub, check the box next to each item on Active listings, then choose End from the Actions menu.1
How long do eBay drafts last?
eBay says drafts expire 75 days after their last edit.3
What Strooply does with ended listings
Strooply does not end a live eBay listing for you. Do that on eBay with the steps above. Once a listing has ended, Strooply's Ended tab lists it, and from there you can relist it or delete it. Strooply refuses to delete an ended listing that has sales on record, and one that eBay shows as live again is left alone until your next sync. Strooply also builds drafts from photos and publishes only after you confirm. See how Strooply works.
Check comps and estimated profit, then review the draft before you list
Strooply is an app for eBay resellers that identifies items from photos, shows live comps and sold-price estimates, drafts eBay listings for your review, and tracks costs and profit.
