How it works

The Promoted Listings fee formula

The same steps run in the calculator above and are written out here for anyone reading without JavaScript.

Ad fee = ad rate x (item price + buyer shipping + sales tax)
Highest ad rate = (profit with no ad - profit to keep) / total sale

Profit with no ad is the eBay payout minus your item cost, shipping label, and supplies. Each point of ad rate takes the same amount out of that profit, so the highest rate is the room left above your target, as a share of the total sale. At a rate of zero profit, the sale breaks even.

Sample sale: $40.00 item plus $5.00 shipping, Most categories, no Store, no sales tax; $10.00 item cost, $5.00 label, $1.00 supplies. Profit with no ad is $22.48; the sale breaks even at a 49.9% ad rate.

Questions

Promoted Listings fee questions

How are Promoted Listings fees calculated?

With a general (cost per sale) campaign, eBay charges your ad rate as a percentage of the item's total sale amount, including item price, shipping, and taxes, when a buyer purchases after clicking the ad within 30 days.

What is the highest ad rate I can afford?

Take the profit the sale leaves with no ad, subtract the profit you want to keep, and divide what is left by the total sale. That share is the highest ad rate that still keeps your target. The calculator does this and also shows the rate where the sale breaks even.

Is the ad fee charged on top of the final value fee?

Yes. The Promoted Listings fee is a separate charge. The final value fee and the per-order fee are charged as usual, and the ad fee is added when the sale counts as coming from the ad.

Does this calculator cover cost per click campaigns?

No. It covers general campaigns, which charge a share of the sale. Priority (cost per click) campaigns charge for clicks whether or not the item sells, so their cost depends on clicks, not on one sale.

How accurate is this calculator?

Fee rates come from eBay's US selling fee pages, last checked on October 25, 2026. It is an estimate for one sale. Whether an ad brings a sale you would not have made is up to the buyer, so treat the result as the most an ad can cost, not as a reason to promote.
