How long do eBay sellers have to ship?
You choose the handling time in each listing, and eBay counts it in business days from the moment you are paid until the carrier scans the package. eBay recommends no more than 2 days.1 This guide covers the seller rules first, then what a buyer can do when an order is late.

The deadline is the handling time you promised
There is no single deadline that applies to every seller. The time you have is the handling time stated in your listing. eBay measures it in business days, and you can choose to count Saturdays or Sundays if you ship on those days. It starts when you receive payment and ends when your carrier scans the package.1
eBay recommends setting handling time to no more than 2 days, says shorter is better, and adds that you should only choose a short time if you can meet it reliably.1 We did not find a maximum handling time stated on the eBay help pages we read, so check the options on your own listing form for the longest time you can choose.
How the handling clock works
- The clock starts at payment. A buyer who clicks Buy It Now but has not paid yet has not started your clock.1
- It runs in business days. If you do not ship on weekends, Saturday and Sunday do not use up your time.1
- It stops at the carrier scan. Printing a label does not stop it. The scan does.1
Estimated delivery dates shown to buyers are built from your handling time, the services you offer, your past delivery performance, carrier performance, the item location and the buyer's address. Weekends and holidays are not counted in those dates, even though some carriers deliver on weekends.1 That is why an optimistic handling time shows up directly as a promise to every buyer.
What 1-day handling really means
One-day handling is not 24 hours. It ends at the end of the next business day.1
| Buyer pays | Carrier scan or tracking needed by |
|---|---|
| Monday | Tuesday, 11:59pm |
| Friday, Saturday or Sunday | Monday, 11:59pm |
If you offer same-day handling, you can set cut-off times so buyers see accurate delivery timeframes. In Shipping Preferences, open the Dispatch and handling section, select Edit under Working days and cut-off time, set your time zone and the cut-offs for your working days, then select Save.1
Short handling also has a payoff beyond the delivery estimate. A Top Rated seller who offers same-day or 1-business-day handling with free returns of 30 days or longer can qualify listings for Top Rated Plus benefits, including a 10% discount on final value fees.2 Check eBay's page for the full conditions before you plan around it.

What a late shipment costs you
eBay tracks a late shipment rate for every seller. With tracking from an integrated carrier, an order counts as late when the delivery scan comes after the latest estimated delivery date and there was no carrier scan within your handling time. Without tracking, eBay asks the buyer in the feedback flow whether the item arrived on time, and a buyer who says it arrived after the estimated date makes it count as late.2
That rate matters in a specific way. eBay says a high late shipment rate alone does not push an account to Below Standard, but a low rate is required for Top Rated status.2 The Top Rated requirements listed include:
- A late shipment rate of no more than 5 orders or 3% of transactions.2
- At least 95% of transactions with tracking uploaded within handling time and validated by the carrier.2
The two measures that can drop you to Below Standard are different: cases closed without seller resolution (no more than 2, or 0.3% of transactions) and the transaction defect rate (no more than 2%). A transaction defect is an unexpected seller cancellation or a case closed without seller resolution, and the policy counts at most one defect per transaction.2 So a late package becomes a bigger problem when the buyer then reports it missing and you do not resolve it.
If a late shipment is on your account for a reason you can show, you may be able to get it removed. eBay removes some automatically, for example after widespread weather events or when tracking shows you shipped on time. For a review, request one within 90 days of the transaction, after waiting up to 72 hours for automatic removal.3 A late shipment can be reviewed and removed when tracking was uploaded before the latest estimated delivery date and shows the acceptance scan was within your handling time, or shows delivery by that date. Orders of $750 or more also need signature confirmation for the delivery route.3
One more limit to know about: the late delivery coverage tied to the Free shipping message does not protect late shipment defects.1
Keeping inside your window
- Set handling time from your real routine, including the days you are away from the post office.
- Upload tracking as soon as the carrier scans, because tracking is how eBay sees you met your time.2
- Keep packing supplies stocked so a missing box never delays a shipment.
- Price shipping and your own time into the sale with the eBay fee calculator.
For carrier choice, labels and packing, see the eBay shipping guide for resellers.
How long you wait, and what to do if it is late
As a buyer, the date that matters is the estimated delivery date. You can find it in your Purchase history.4 The dates eBay shows come from the seller's handling time plus transit, so a seller with 2-day handling and a slower carrier will show a later date than one with same-day handling.1
If the item has not arrived by that date, eBay's steps are:
- Check tracking. Open the order in Purchases to see the expected delivery date, the shipping address and the latest tracking updates.5
- Contact the seller. eBay says the seller is the best person to start with, and you can ask for an update, a replacement or a refund.5
- Report the item as not arrived. You can do this once the estimated delivery date has passed, and no later than 30 calendar days after it. The seller must respond within 3 business days with tracking, a delivery update or a refund.4
- Ask eBay to step in. If the seller has not resolved it, you can ask eBay to help from the request details in Purchases, within 21 business days of opening the request.5
If the item does arrive after the estimated date, eBay treats a return as if the item did not match the listing, so the seller pays for return shipping.4 If tracking says delivered but you cannot find it, eBay suggests checking around your property, asking neighbors, contacting the carrier and looking at any delivery photo before you report it.5 Coverage is under eBay Money Back Guarantee, which has exclusions, such as payments made outside eBay, so read the policy for your order.4
Shipping time questions
How long do eBay sellers have to ship?
They have the handling time stated in the listing, counted in business days from payment until the carrier scans the package. eBay recommends no more than 2 days.1
Does an eBay seller have to ship within 24 hours?
Not unless they offer same-day handling. One-day handling ends at the end of the next business day, not after 24 hours.1
Do weekends count in eBay handling time?
Handling time is in business days, and sellers can choose to include Saturdays or Sundays if they ship on those days. Weekends are not counted in estimated delivery dates.1
How long does eBay take to ship an item?
eBay does not ship the item, the seller does. Delivery time is the seller's handling time plus carrier transit, and the estimated delivery date is shown on the listing and in your Purchase history.1
What happens if a seller ships late on eBay?
The order can count toward the seller's late shipment rate. A high rate alone does not cause a Below Standard level, but a low rate is required for Top Rated status.2
What can I do if my eBay order has not arrived by the estimated date?
Contact the seller, then report the item as not arrived within 30 calendar days of the estimated delivery date. If the seller does not resolve it, you can ask eBay to step in.4
Can a seller remove a late shipment from their record?
Sometimes. eBay removes some automatically, and a seller can request a review within 90 days of the transaction if tracking shows the item was scanned within handling time or delivered on time.3
Strooply does not run your shipping clock
Strooply does not set handling time, upload tracking or show whether an order has been scanned. You manage those on eBay, in your listing and Shipping Preferences. What Strooply does is the money side: its profit tracking accounts for shipping labels and return shipping along with fees, refunds and your cost of the item. See how Strooply works and the eBay profit tracker.
Check comps and estimated profit, then review the draft before you list
Strooply is an app for eBay resellers that identifies items from photos, shows live comps and sold-price estimates, drafts eBay listings for your review, and tracks costs and profit.
